Clearly, Einstein’s difﬁculty pertained to the interpretation of the diffeomorphic point transformations rather than to any trivial confusion regarding coordinate transformations, as has been frequently alleged. In late 1915, Einstein realized the faulty presupposition required for the discordant conclusion that these distinct solutions correspond to different physical situations.
